An East African country dominated by hills and mountains, there is a considerable altitude variation where coffee territories lie. The lowest point is 772 meters above sea level at the boarder of the Lake Tanganyika, while the highest point soars at 2670 meters above sea level at the tip of Mount Heha.
Coffee plantings cover an area of 60,000 hectares on a small scale.
About 80,000 households depend on coffee farming for their livelihood while each farmer is tendering about 50-250 coffee trees.
Coffee constitutes the most profitable agricultural resource as well as the largest source of export revenues (more than 80% of the total export revenues). Since 1998, Burundi has proved its vast potential to produce the best in specialty coffee.
